Great Council of Chiefs Review Team member and former President of the Fiji Law Society Graham Leung

Great Council of Chiefs Review Team member and former President of the Fiji Law Society, Graham Leung says a lot of iTaukei are concerned and confused as to how they own 92 percent of the land in Fiji and yet they comprise 75 percent of the poverty statistics that was highlighted in the Fiji Bureau of Statistics Household Income and Expenditure Survey.

While speaking on fijivillage Straight Talk With Vijay Narayan, Leung says iTaukei are concerned about their resources and are hoping that the new set up of the GCC will play a greater role in the economic empowerment of the indigenous Fijians.

He says the statistics of 75 percent does not gel well in many minds because the indigenous Fijians own most of the resources in Fiji.

When questioned on where can the GCC assist in this, Leung says the GCC can play a bigger role and be more involved in guiding the iTaukei in terms of the usage of their resources.

He says agriculture is potentially a very big contributor to the reduction of poverty.
