Villagers of Yasawa and Mamanuca will be trained on sustainable practices through the 450,000 Euros project supported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and funded by the Government of Germany.

UN Food and Agriculture Organization Assistant Country Representative, Joann Young says these projects are to support sustainable and climate-smart practices to help build resilient agriculture, fisheries and forest production systems in Fiji.

Young says these projects will help in combatting climate change as Fiji has been stricken by devastating climate events in the recent years.

Vinaka Fiji – Yasawa Trust Fund Foundation and Mamanuca Environment Society are the partners that will carry out these projects.

Vinaka Fiji – Yasawa Trust Fund Foundation Representative, Elenoa Nimacere says these projects will help villagers revive sustainable traditional practices to preserve and utilize their land and maritime resources.

Nimacere says it will also enhance income generating activities for these villagers, and they can even supply their produce and products to nearby resorts in Yasawa and Mamanuca.

The Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries and Food and UN Agriculture Organization signed an agreement today to carry out forest and landscape restoration, and adaptive fisheries management projects in the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups.
