Working Group Meeting to coordinate the first-ever community based recycling program

Waste Recyclers Fiji (WRFL) and Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) recognizes that for the successful implementation of some its upcoming projects, effective partnership with key stakeholders will be critical.

As such, a project-partners meeting was held today in preparation for the launch of the first-ever community-based recycling program.

In attendance were representatives from International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) virtually, Nausori Town Council (NTC), Department of Environment (DOE), community members as well as WRFL and PRF core group.

“Such partners meeting is critical for the sustainability of these new concepts that we are introducing in the recycling space as we cannot effectively implement new programs in isolation,” said WRFL Director/CEO and PRF Founder Amitesh Deo.

“We also value the expertise that different stakeholders are able to bring to the table,” said Mr. Deo.

One of the key deliverables of a recently signed agreement between WRFL/PRF and IUCN is the implementation of a pilot community based recycling program. Today’s meeting was aimed to discuss the key next steps as the WRFL/PRFL prepares for the launch of this important pilot project.

“Since this is a pilot project, it is important that we establish a good reporting as well as monitoring and evaluation system,” said Mr. Deo.

“The data from this project as well as lessons learnt will pave a clear pathway for program upscaling and to implement it in other areas” said Mr. Deo.

The group agreed on several next steps for the implementation of the community based pilot project which includes a community consultation and comprehensive training and awareness sessions.

Part of the program is also the installation of a special designed “I Recycle” bin which will be launched at the community in early October.
