Women's representation in Fiji's politics has declined from 20 percent in 2018 to just 14 percent following the 2022 General Elections.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica highlighted this during the Capacity Building Training for Women and Youth Prospective Election Candidates, organised by Dialogue Fiji.

Kamikamica says that the under representation of women in political leadership is a global issue and Fiji is no exception.

He says while women make up 50 percent of Fiji's population, their presence in decision-making bodies, particularly in Parliament and local government, remains disproportionately low.

The Deputy Prime Minister further says that this imbalance needs to be addressed, as diverse leadership is crucial for better decision-making.

Meanwhile, Dialogue Fiji Executive Director, Niles Lal says they are trying to mobilise this issue by having several bilateral meetings with the government as this issue is something the government should be worried about.

Lal says they will carry out this workshop at various parts of Fiji so that more women show their interest and get motivated.

He adds they are also planning to establish mentoring schemes for future leaders with the expertise of overseas and local stakeholders.
