The Nasinu Town Council with the help of 25 soldiers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces has now cleaned up piles of uncollected garbage, green waste, and white goods along Sangam Road in Narere and Navosai.

Large piles of rubbish had accumulated along Sangam Road in Narere and Navosai after the government called on Fijians to clean up their neighborhoods to prevent leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, and diarrhoea.

The rubbish in these areas had been uncollected for weeks, some have been piled up since Fiji's Weekend of Readiness and Responsibility on April 25th and 26th.

After the clean up in Navosai and Narere, the Council is hoping to move to other areas around Nasinu.

The Nasinu Town Council Board has also endorsed the hiring of two grabbers and two additional 12-tonne open tip trucks to help expedite the garbage collection.

There is about 300 loads of waste that needs to be collected in Nasinu.

Special Administrator Baskaran Nair had told Fijivillage that the amount of rubbish is increasing day by day and the large piles are also causing a delay in the collection.

He had said that as of Monday, more than 100 tonnes of waste from Nasinu has been transported to Naboro Landfill.

Nair said they are planning to complete clearing by the end of this month.
