Coming from a Hindu background, we need to completely stop using plastic in any religious event because, after those events are finished it, is dumped in the sea.

This has been highlighted by Protected and Conserved Areas Coordinator at International Union for Conservation of Nature - Oceania Rahul Chand, during fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan.

Chand says there is a need to preserve our traditions to protect the larger interests of mankind and the bigger message is to get away from something for the sake and protection of our species and oceans.

He asks the people if certain traditions can be performed without the use of endangered species, such as turtles.

Chand further says there is a need to completely eliminate the use of plastic from our lives as much as possible, which is impacting our marine lives.

He says our tourism industry is thriving based on some of the resources that are shown to the world, and if there is continuous pollution of our oceans, there will come a time when the industry will have nothing to show the world. Chand adds every individual needs to think about it because it is our future.
