Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited has expressed concerns on the absence of civic pride when it comes to recycling practices.

CEO Amitesh Deo says they are genuinely concerned, that after 26 years in the business, there is an apparent decline in civic pride when it comes to recycling.

Deo adds civic pride does not only mean keeping our surroundings clean and tidy but also means effectively managing the waste we produce and ensuring it is disposed carefully to ensure it does not have an impact on the environment or contribute to the flooding events.

He further says everything that we dispose off without thinking has the potential to negatively impact the life of another Fijian and we need to start taking ownership of the waste that we produce.

Deo also says people also have to move their mindsets away from always thinking of how they could benefit from recycling and waste management.

He adds they need stakeholders to come together and work with companies like Waste Recyclers (Fiji) Ltd who have been committed in reducing recyclables from ending up in our landfills, rivers and creeks.

Deo says there is also a need to look at a subsidy system for companies like Waste Recyclers, similar to those in other developed nations who have effective waste management and recycling programs, like Japan.
