Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited and the Pacific Recycling Foundation team represented Fiji at the prestigious 2024 Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) Awards in Sydney, where Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited was nominated for the Improved Recycling System Award.

In a statement, PRF say this significant event was not just a celebration of sustainable practices but also an opportunity to showcase the authentic essence of Fiji - its culture, resilience, and diversity.

They say one of the talked-about elements of the evening was the shawl worn by WRFL CEO/Director and Founder of PFR, Amitesh Deo which carried a powerful story and deep symbolism.

The outfit was designed and crafted by Faruna Shehnaaz, a tailor and owner of Saniz Fashion in Nakasi.

In a heartfelt effort, Shehnaaz skillfully merged two culturally significant materials: an old sari belonging to Amitesh’s late mother, Pushpa Wati Deo, and traditional iTaukei tapa material.

According to Deo, the inclusion of the iTaukei tapa material reflects the richness of Fijian culture and the harmonious coexistence of its diverse communities.

Amitesh says the shawl is a tribute to his late mother and the countless individuals who face adversity but never stop fighting for their rights.

He says it is also a representation of Fiji’s multicultural identity, which is the foundation of everything they do at WRFL and PRF.

He adds this story is not just about the garment, it is about the values it embodies, which are resilience, justice, and unity.
