Close to 200 people living on Kia Island will be able to access water from the comfort of their homes after the completion of the borehole projects.

Kia Island consists of three villages, Ligau, Daku and Yaro.

The borehole project at Yaro village has been successfully completed.

Yaro Village headman Kemueli Lautiki says a borehole project started way back in 2000 but it didn’t work out well.

He says they tried every possible way to bring water to their homes but unfortunately, it didn’t materialize.

Lautiki says this new borehole project in Yaro Village has certainly given them relief.

He thanked the Government, especially the Prime Minister for hearing their plight.

Meanwhile, borehole drilling has commenced at Daku village and for 67-year-old Viliame Rokogata, this is a new dawn for the island of Kia.

He says most of the time they are dependent on rainwater and water cartage by a Government barge upon request.

Rokogata says he was emotional and in tears when the machine started drilling because he knows the struggle of looking for water over the years will now be a thing of the past once this project is a success.
