Residents of Vatuwaqa are expressing outrage after reports surfaced of garlands being stolen after burials at the Vatuwaqa Cemetery in Suva and resold, causing emotional distress to grieving families.

While speaking to fijiVillage News, the National Secretary of the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, Pt. Krishneel Tiwari, condemned the act, calling it a violation of both ethical values and sacred religious practices.

He says stealing garlands disrespects the deceased and disrupts the spiritual sanctity of burial grounds, which should be places of peace and reverence.

Tiwari says the theft also erodes the cultural and religious importance of garlands, which are offered as a symbol of love, respect, and devotion during last rites.

He says such actions may be perceived as a karmic violation, which can carry spiritual repercussions according to Hindu beliefs, as they involve tampering with items sanctified by rituals.

The National Secretary says while the issue may be more prevalent at Vatuwaqa Cemetery due to factors like accessibility and lack of security, it could have broader effects on the Hindu community.

The Sanatan Sabha has called for immediate action to address the issue, recommending enhanced security measures, such as CCTV cameras, security guards and improved lighting at the cemetery.

He says they also recommend creating volunteer groups to oversee cemetery activities and raise awareness about the sanctity of burial rituals. Tiwari urges people to reflect deeply on the spiritual and moral significance of their actions.

He says burial ceremonies are not merely physical acts — they are profound expressions of love, respect and reverence for the departed soul.
