Urban Search and Rescue training underway to build a safer Fiji

As part of building a safer and more resilient Fiji, over 50 participants from government agencies, National Fire Authority and Australian Disaster Assessment Team are taking part in the first-ever Urban Search and Rescue Training this week.

While officiating at the opening of the 1-week Urban Search and Rescue Training this morning, Deputy Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mitieli Cama says the event marks a significant milestone in their commitment for disaster preparedness and response towards Fiji.

Cama says the training is also a build-up for the National Disaster Awareness Week that is scheduled to be held next week.

Cama says Fiji is not immune to the forces of nature where cyclones, floods, earthquakes and other disasters can strike at any moment, and it's our responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all Fijians.

He adds that they have seen the introduction of tall buildings being constructed in Fiji, but they need to take the approach of upskilling their people should there be an incident or accident soon.

The Deputy Secretary says this is not just to prepare for emergencies, but it is part of building a culture of resilience that will serve Fiji well in the years to come.
