The unity observed for Holi should not just be for one day.

Pandit Vijendra Mishra highlighted this as a number of people gathered to celebrate Holi at the Sanatan Shiv Mandir in Samabula last night.

Devotees from nearby areas sang folk songs, played with colours and spread the joy and happiness of the festival.

Pandit Mishra says by playing with colours during Holi and showing that we are one should not be just for one day.

Mishra says there is no point if people do not show the same love and affection going forward.

He also says that it is no secret that a number of people in Fiji have been badly affected by COVID-19 and Tropical Cyclones and may not be celebrating Holi because they do not have enough.

Pandit Mishra adds the world has been through many challenging times in the past but the scriptures have always maintained that the bad times will go away.

According to legend, the arrogant demonic King Hiranyakashyap who could neither be killed by a man or an animal had demanded that everybody worship him as god.

The king's son, Prahlada, disagreed and chose to remain devoted to Lord Vishnu so the king's sister, tricked him into sitting on a pyre with her. While Holika protected herself with a cloak, Prahlada remained exposed. As the fire blazed, the cloak flew from Holika's body and encased Prahlada, thus saving his life.

Later, Lord Vishnu appeared in the avatar of Narsimha, half man and half lion, and killed the king. This is why Holi begins with the Holika bonfire, which marks the end of evil.

Meanwhile, the Radio Sargam and Navtarang Rang Barse Holi Celebration will be held from midday to 8pm this Sunday at Rups Mega Complex Nakasi.

You can meet your favourite radio personalities, watch them dance, play with colours and also get the opportunity to win prizes.
