The University of Fiji’s partnership with the Fiji Chess Federation’s February Rapid Tournament held at the University’s Saweni Campus has been a success and a great opportunity for the participants representing Fiji in the international tournaments later this year.

Vice-President of the Fiji Chess Federation, Taione Sikivou says that the University’s support was crucial for the Federation to host successful tournaments in the Western Division.

Sikivou says finding a venue is a major challenge in the Western Division and an added cost for the FCF.

The University’s Strategic Plan 2022-2026 includes supporting chess tournaments at national and international levels.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shaista Shameem says the University focuses on extra-curricular activities and events at the same time as emphasizing formal quality-driven qualifications.

Professor Shameem says students who participated in chess tournaments developed much needed strategic and tactical skills.

The University will be hosting all national and even international tournaments in future at the request of the Fiji Chess Federation.
