University of Fiji Medical and Nursing students have taken up the initiative to conduct a clean-up campaign at the Navua Hospital this Saturday after calls received from the Navua Hospital Board of Visitors for community support of their efforts to assist with spring cleaning the hospital.

The Acting Dean of the University's Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science Associate, Professor Doctor Abhijit Gogoi, says they are hopeful that the people living around the Navua area will also be part of this project, and the University is looking forward to participating in other similar good causes for the community.

Professor Gogoi says they were invited to be a part of this amazing initiative and are glad to be able to help as it will allow them to not only be part of the clean-up campaign but also to connect with the community.

He says their event aims to improve the overall cleanliness and aesthetics of Navua Hospital, foster community engagement and promote a sense of responsibility and civic pride among the medical and nursing students of the University.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shaista Shameem, says the Hospital Board had sent out a call for assistance to help spring clean at the Navua Hospital, and she saw it as a way to uphold the University’s community and corporate responsibility.

Professor Shameem says she was delighted with the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science’s immediate response to her request for assistance on clean-up day, as both students and staff had stepped up.

She says the Sugar Taxis had offered a bus free of charge, and the University is grateful to the owner for agreeing to provide complimentary transport to the staff and students.

She adds they are anticipating more than 25 MBBS and nursing students and five lecturing staff, including the UPSM Deputy Dean Dr Samuela Korovou, to be part of this community service.

The clean-up activity will begin at 9am this Saturday.
