UN Secretary-General congratulates PM

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has congratulated Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on recent assumption of office and has wished him success in his leadership of the country.

He has commended the recent election in Fiji which, is an important milestone in the country’s consolidation of democracy.

Guterres in a congratulatory message to the Prime Minister says the United Nations stands ready to support his national priorities, including economic recovery and addressing challenges related to climate change as well as the effective implementation of the Samoa Pathway, as well as the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

He says Fiji has been a staunch supporter of multilateralism and climate advocacy, and the country’s meaningful contribution to United Nations peacekeeping is highly appreciated.

Guterres further says he counting on Rabuka to continue to advance the values and ideals enshrined in the United Nations Charter, including that of gender equality.

He says in this connection, he welcomes the efforts of Fiji country to advance the political participation of women and has encourage Rabuka’s leadership to accelerate progress, including by seeking gender parity in Cabinet and senior appointments.

The UN Secretary-General looks forward to continuing the close collaboration with the Prime Minister and the Fiji Government on issues of interest to Fiji and to the wider Pacific region.
