Nurses and healthcare workers in the rural Western Division have raised concerns with the Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu about transport issues that they face daily when going to and from work.

During the Minister’s visit to the health care facilities in the rural Western Division, transportation emerged as a significant concern raised and they acknowledged the vital need for improved transportation for staff operating in remote areas.

Dr Lalabalavu says the purpose of the visit is to see firsthand the state of the infrastructure, talk with the staff who work in those health facilities, and assess both the inside and outside of the facilities as the Ministry’s role is to ensure that the infrastructure is in good shape and conducive to a working environment.

He says travelling through the terrain is challenging, and they requested some vehicles, especially one suitable for this terrain.

He adds he supports this request, and it is the responsibility of the ministry to see how best they can provide their staff working in these difficult environments with the necessary support, particularly in terms of transportation.

The Minister adds that another pressing issue highlighted was the need for adequate and clean water supply and issues with human resources and urged communities to take ownership of their health centres as it is for the community.

Dr Lalabalavu says he emphasised to the communities the importance of a sense of ownership and responsibility.

He says they have a responsibility to look after the facility and if they are willing to help in terms of cleaning the compound or maintaining the facility, that would be beneficial.

Dr Lalabalavu says the Government will do its best to improve infrastructure, ensure that medicines and consumables are available on time, and provide remuneration.

He says the Government aims for the facilities that these healthcare workers work in to be usable and livable, with good running water, electricity, and essential communications and connectivity.
