Torture and ill-treatment of any form deny the dignity of human beings which remains a global challenge.

This was highlighted by Attorney-General Siromi Turaga during the opening of the Pacific Learning Exchange on the United Nations Convention against torture at the Intercontinental Resort and Spa this morning.

The Attorney-General says the Pacific must develop a multi-faceted approach that encompasses preventative measures, accountability mechanisms and support for victims to address torture and ill-treatment of its people.

Turaga says torture and ill-treatment of people are inadequate legal frameworks and societal attitudes that perpetuate violence and discrimination.

He also stressed that such a workshop is important as participants share knowledge and learn from one another in order to find new and innovative ways to ensure that our future generation inherits a culture of compassion that recognises that everyone deserves to be treated equally.

He encourages all to take advantage of the three days regional seminars to share experiences.
