If you are living in the Greater Suva Nausori Area, please store enough water that can last you for 2 to 3 days because water will not be restored immediately after the work at the Waila Water Treatment Plant is completed.

There are also concerns regarding supply from the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant as residents do not have water for the second day.

The Water Authority of Fiji will be shutting down the Waila Water Treatment Plant from this hour to 8 tonight and has said that water will gradually be restored as works on re-filling reservoirs and re-pressuring the system will take time.

No timeframe for restoration has been given.

WAF says these works are critical as the existing 2 x 1.5MVa transformers are over 30 years old and now past their design life, increasing the likelihood of failure, which would cause a widespread shutdown should they continue to be operated.

They say the first phase, which took place on the 20th of January, consists of the connection of a 2 x 2MVa Temporary transformer, while the second phase, which is scheduled tonight, will include the connection and commissioning of the new permanent transformers.

Meanwhile, thousands of residents in the Suva-Nausori corridor did not have water from last night to this morning, and WAF Chief Operating Officer, Seru Soderberg, says they are starting to slowly recover water levels to their main distribution system supplied through the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant.

He says raw water inflow into the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant is increasingly susceptible to climate variability.

He also says the flow had dropped due to falling river levels over the past few days and has now improved.

This has improved the Tamavua Reservoir levels.

Soderberg also says the planned works for the Waila Treatment Plant from 5pm to 8 tonight will only affect those supplied by the Waila Treatment Plant.

The Waila Treatment Plant supplies 60 percent of water to the Suva system.
