Thousands gather at Subrail Park to celebrate Fiji Day with unity and pride

Subrail Park in Labasa was covered in a sea of blue and white as thousands of Fijians showed their Fijian spirit by turning up to celebrate the country’s 54th Independence Day.

Celebrations began with a march in Labasa Town, led by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces band and it also included officials from various ministries and school students.

RFMF performed the Trooping of Colours Parade at Subrail Park and was observed by President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere which was followed by a 21-gun salute and the singing of the National Anthem.

Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate says what Fiji Day means to the people of Labasa has been exemplified by the huge turnout at Subrail Park.

He says it shows that Fiji is their land and their home.

Labasa resident, Usaia Cama says he loved the display from the RFMF and he is happy he was able to come for the celebrations.

The 81-year-old says he was a teenager in Suva when Fiji gained its independence and was at Albert Park on the day our new flag was raised.

He, however, believes this will be his last celebration.

Cama thanked the Coalition Government for bringing the celebration to the North, where people from all different ethnic backgrounds came together to celebrate this special day.

Tui Namuka Ratu Tevita Niumataiwalu says he is happy that people could witness the celebration in Labasa after 2018.

He says everyone from the three provinces of Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata in Vanua Levu are celebrating.

Ratu Tevita says we have come through hard times and he is proud that Fijians run the country.

Naodamu, Labasa resident Kamlesh Prasad says the Subrail Park is full of people from all works of life.

Prasad says independence is a great achievement for any country as the running of the country becomes the responsibility of the people.

He says he is happy to see that there were many ministers at the celebration and adds everyone, despite their political leanings should be part of the celebrations.

Celebrations continue at Subrail Park with oratories, entertainment and lunch for the people.
