The Permanent Secretary for Environment Joshua Wycliffe says it has been formally raised through the Litter Free Fiji Think Tank by a local government representative that the penalties in place do not sufficiently discourage people from littering.

Wycliffe says he tends to agree with that, however, there are legislators and a government that is committed to ensuring Fiji is litter-free.

He says the recommendations from the Litter Free Fiji Think Tank will be fed into the government instruments and taken forward through a regulatory approach.

Wycliffe says if the increase of fines would discourage littering, they would look at that option as well.

He says they also want to put in place formal ways to audit garbage collection processes.

The spot fine for people caught littering is $40.
