Right : Fiji Council of Social Services Director, Vani Catanasiga

Fiji Council of Social Services Director, Vani Catanasiga stresses that adequate legislation is in place but there is not enough capacity and we have limited resources to counter the problem of human trafficking in the country.

Catanasiga says the public is now at the forefront of this public consciousness that human trafficking is happening in Fiji.

She says there are countless stories of human trafficking, and she is urging the media to exercise their power to be the change and always believe in the power of the pen.

Catanasiga reiterates that certain factors contribute to the increase in human trafficking, and one is the labour scheme by our development partners.

She says this is where people sign their contracts and do not understand the entire contractual agreement before they leave our shores.

Catanasiga says the partnership should be called the Tavale Partnership.

She stresses that most people in power have impostor syndrome.

Catanasiga is urging the Government and various stakeholders to look at vehicle operators in rural areas, who are luring young girls for their intentions, massage parlors, and a few brothels that are operating illegally, and to address the issue of eloping because it has increased.
