Taxis can now operate from any rank within their designated area of operations

With the open taxi rank system now operational, taxis can operate from any rank within their designated area of operations on a first in, first out basis.

A rank is a special parking area allocated for a taxi to line up for passengers.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, designated area of operation refers to the zone or district the taxi is licensed to operate from which means that a taxi from Nausori zone cannot operate from a Suva zone rank.

Taxis must exit the ranks as soon as hired by a passenger and cannot be left unattended.

The Ministry says taxis operating from private bases can continue to do so as normal however, these taxis will also have access to all the public ranks from their area of operations.

It says if a rank is full, taxis should continue on to the next available rank and taxis must not line up behind full ranks.

Meanwhile, Fiji Taxi Association General Secretary, Ashwin Lal says there is a lot of confusion amongst taxi drivers as to how this system will operate.

They have filed for a court injunction.

The case is yet to be called.
