The Tavua Town Council has plans to build a new Tavua Market and a new bus stand for the benefit of its ratepayers and visitors.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar during the Fiji 50 Celebrations honouring the long term businesses of Tavua and Rakiraki Town.

Kumar says Tavua Town Council is also in the midst of upgrading the Children's Park.

She says Tavua is a vibrant and growing town where they are continuously seeing changes.

Kumar says Tavua has 287 ratepayers while the Tavua District population is 23,000.

She says Rakiraki has a new market, which is a double-storey modern structure that includes market space, women vendor’s accommodation, fish market, office space, two kiosks and toilet facilities.

The Minister says it houses 320 stalls and has 142 registered vendors.

She says this is new and modern market for the residents of Rakiraki to conveniently buy their produce with appropriate parking spaces.

Kumar says the wonderful facility is an easy day’s outing from Suva, and is attracting attention.

The Minister conveyed her appreciation for the contributions of all the residents of Tavua and Rakiraki.

She urged the communities to look to the future, as their best days are yet to come.

Kumar says the Tavua Town Council and Rakiraki Town Council have seized the golden opportunity to honour their pioneering business community.

She says as we continue to celebrate Fiji’s 50th year of independence, we should remember that a nation is not built in a day or a decade or even a century,it is refined and reformed over time.

Kumar says truly great nations confront their past injustices, change laws that need to be changed, and reform the way they do things.
