The residents of Taveuni are hoping that the Black Point Jetty will be operational soon so that the issue of overcrowding can be solved.

The Taveuni District Officer, Abdul Hakim highlighted this while briefing the Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka at the Taveuni District Office.

Hakim says residents from Taveuni have informed the Prime Minister’s Office that it is not operational due to some land issues which need to be addressed.

The District Officer says according to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, the jetty at times gets crowded when two big ships from Suva and two additional ferries arrive at Taveuni.

Hakim says the situation at times becomes a hassle for the Police and MSAF.

He says the people are also requesting ferries to operate from Black Point jetty after it becomes operational.

Hakim further says due to the issue of overcrowding some vehicles end up in the sea as most of the space is taken by the buses.

In response, Ditoka says he will take the request of the District Officer to the Cabinet.
