Serious concerns have been raised regarding the increase in crime rates in the community of Tamavua Central, and members of the community are taking proactive measures to address these concerns.

Resident and retired school principal Vincent McKenzie says with a high crime rate, they have decided that working to look after one another is a great avenue to help address the issue.

McKenzie highlighted that a lot of criminal activity was noticed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic however, the community stood together.

He adds that they have also looked at assisting the needs of nearby settlements where the criminal activities from youths emerged.

McKenzie says the the Tamavua Central Neighbourhood Watch is looking as ways to engage the youth in and around the vicinity with short courses like carpentry, music and others to help keep them out of trouble.

The Tamavua Central Neighbourhood Watch held a meeting this weekend with the Fiji Police, Ministry of Youth, Suva City Council and nearby residents to discuss issues and plans to address them moving forward.
