TISI Sangam Secretary General, Damend Gounder says the organisation has made it mandatory for all their individual committees to have at least 30% women representation in their Council of Management.

While speaking at the International Women's Day celebration at Nasinu Sangam School, Gounder says it took the organisation 95 years to say yes to have 30% of their membership in the Council of Management to be females.

He says they should work on increasing that percentage.

Gounder has also highlighted that their religion has restrictions on women that needs to be talked about.

He says it is up to parents now to change the way they raise their children.

The Secretary General adds he is ready to talk about the TISI Sangam constitution according to which women lose certain rights if they marry outside their society.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary for Education, Doctor Anjeela Jokhan says women need to stay focused, progress as they want and not wait for somebody else to do anything for them.

Dr. Jokhan says over the years, she has seen more and more women get into the field of science, technology, engineering and maths.

The former Dean of the USP Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment says it is important that women are not stereotyped and must be given the opportunity to enter the field that they want and adds this begins from their home where families must give equal opportunity to their daughters as well.

Dr. Jokhan adds she has seen over the years that women outperform most men in their chosen field of study.
