Minister for Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu says the Tropical Cyclones Yasa and Ana impacted over 63,000 families and caused damages amounting to more than $500 Million.

Seruiratu highlighted this while briefing people on our preparations for the 2021/2022 cyclone season.

He says the Ministry has conducted operational readiness check for all Emergency Operation Centres, equipment and facilities and we currently have about 60% readiness status.

Seruiratu adds they will be working in the next month to bridge the identified gaps to ensure we are well prepared.

He says we have over 1,000 evacuation centres that play a fundamental role in managing the impacts of natural disasters by offering emergency shelter.

Seruiratu says the four Divisional Commissioners are currently working with their respective Provincial Administrators and District Officers to conduct an assessment of all identified evacuation centres within their divisions.

He says they are also working with key government agencies to not only ensure that the evacuation centres adhere to COVID-19 protocols but that they are also safe and secure for occupation.
