A Sydney shopper has filmed a physical altercation between three women at a Woolworths store in Chullora, Australia in an apparent feud over toilet paper.

The footage, circulated on social media on Saturday, shows Woolworths staff intervening in the dispute and urging those involved to "back off right now" from a trolley stacked with jumbo packs of toilet rolls.

A shopper involved in the fracas says to another woman at the helm of the overflowing trolley that she just wants one pack.

9News reported that local police attended the scene.

The incident is the latest in a series of scuffles in supermarkets as shoppers panic-buy products in a bid to prepare for the likely spread of the novel coronavirus.

Supermarket shelves have been stripped bare in some Australian suburbs.

A Woolworths spokesperson says they can confirm an incident involving customers at their Chullora store in Sydney earlier today.

They say they will not tolerate violence of any kind from their customers in their stores and they are working with police who are investigating the matter.

Woolworths and Coles Australia have responded to the panic-buying sprees by imposing a limit of four packs of toilet paper per customer in any single transaction.

The restrictions apply in store and online.
