People in Suva City can expect improvement in the drainage system and an end to surface flooding after heavy rain as works to install new culverts at the Suva Bus Stand have started.

Suva City Council CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa says last night, the SCC and the Fiji Roads Authority started installing new culverts at the Suva Bus Stand.

He says this work is part of the Bridge to Bridge project to improve the drainage system and stop road damage caused by water.

Boseiwaqa adds these upgrades will help water flow better and make the bus stand safer and more efficient for everyone.

Additionally, SCC has taken necessary steps to relocate stallholders from the MPI Carpark to the Suva Municipal Market to improve the carpark

SCC says 13 vendors and 24 stalls along the car park have been relocated as part of these essential upgrades.

They say over the past few months, the Council has been actively engaged with stall holders by issuing reminder notices and collaborating closely to identify suitable alternative locations for their businesses.

SCC says these efforts have ensured the relocation process is smooth, equitable and in full compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards while facilitating the necessary infrastructure improvements.

Boseiwaqa says the Council has worked diligently to ensure this process is inclusive and transparent.

He says they signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the stall owners after thorough consultations last month and they were pleased that the feedback from the vendors has been largely positive.

Boseiwaqa says this reflects their shared commitment to creating a solution that benefits everyone involved.

The CEO further says to ensure the upgrades proceed smoothly and minimize inconvenience to daily commuters, temporary road closures will be implemented where the entrance of the bus stand will be closed between 8pm and 5am to avoid disruptions during peak traffic hours.

Boseiwaqa adds the collaboration between the SCC and FRA is a testament to their shared commitment to improving the city’s infrastructure in a way that meets the community’s present and future needs.

He says the drainage works currently underway form the first phase of this four week project.

He says these upgrades are essential for enhancing the city while creating a more reliable and efficient urban environment for all.
