Great news for sugarcane farmers as they will receive historic payments before Diwali.

In a statement, the Ministry of Sugar Industry says in May 2024, farmers had received $21.75 per tonne, taking the 2023 crop payment to an unprecedented amount of $101.08 per tonne, which is the highest payment ever recorded.

Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh says an additional $2.57 per tonne had been scheduled to be paid out before Diwali to recognise their efforts in the industry.

He says in accordance with the promises made to ordinary Fijians, the government continues to deliver assistance in key areas with the objective of enhancing the livelihoods of sugarcane farmers across the nation.

Singh says to provide additional relief and motivation, the government will top-up the cane payment by an additional $1.43 per tonne, bringing the final payout to $4 per tonne.

He further says this brings the total cane payment to a historic $105.08 per tonne, an all-time historic high in Fiji’s sugarcane industry.

The Minister adds with Diwali approaching, this timely payment will offer the hardworking farmers a much-needed reason to rejoice and celebrate their dedication and resilience.
