Sugar supply expected to normalize from today

Fijians can start to expect sugar supply to normalize from today.

This comes after the Fiji Sugar Corporation put in place a 24 hours, 7 days a week operation of their packing plant.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission CEO, Joel Abraham says following the assessment and discussion with FSC and Fiji Police, they would like to inform Fijians that FSC has more than 15,000 tonnes in total sugar stock that needs packaging into smaller packs such as 2kg and 4kg packs.

Abraham says with the 24/7 operation in place, delivery to Suva, Tavua, Ba, Rakiraki and Nausori commenced this morning while other areas will be serviced tomorrow into early next week.

While the Fiji Sugar Corporation confirms there is no sugar shortage in the country, some major supermarkets do not have it in stock.

FSC Chief Executive Office, Graham Clark says they are packing and loading sugar orders as normal, despite the lockdown in Lautoka.

Clark says they are unaware of shortages but understand that some shops are limiting purchases to avoid panic buying.

He says for merchants who are able to collect, full loading is taking place and stocks are sufficient.

Clark believes that the problem is that merchants cannot transport beyond the extended Lautoka restricted area.

We have noticed that there is no sugar in some supermarkets like MH Super Fresh, Kundan Singh Supermarket, Shop and Save, Rajendra’s Supermarket and MHCC.
