As Fiji is experiencing the impacts of climate change, school children are now taking a step toward conducting awareness and conferences where they can share ideas and thoughts on how we can come together to reduce the effects of climate crisis in our ocean.

The Learning Centre representatives during the Veivueti Kids Ocean Conference at the International School Suva focused their presentation on plastic pollution, how it affects the ecosystem and also the destruction of food chains.

They are asking the question of how we can save our ocean and some of the solutions that they came up with are, avoiding dumping rubbish into the sea and practicing the process of ‘Recycling, Reuse and Reduce’.

They further say one of the common issues in Fiji is litter and the public seems to ignore how it ends up creating a big mess to our livelihood.

International School Suva Principal, Thomas Van Der Wielen says the introduction of the Oceans Program in their school has driven the idea to learn and understand the life of creatures in the ocean and how it can be spread out to other students in Fiji.

Wielen says the work of reducing climate crisis requires collaboration for everyone because it affects everyone.

Wielen is reminding children that it is not too late to act on changing the world, it requires effort and collaboration.

More than 20 students were part of this conference.
