The 20-days extension of the State of Natural Disaster for the Northern Division ends today but government teams will continue with clean-up activities because of concerns about Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Diarrhoea and Dengue Fever.

More than 10 people have passed away from Leptospirosis, 1 from Dengue Fever and 1 from Typhoid this year.

The Ministry of Health has recorded 160 Leptospirosis cases, 335 Dengue cases and 53 Typhoid cases nationwide.

Minister for Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu has told senior staff of the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management to maintain the current operation tempo as they are not out of the woods yet.

He has asked for an increase in awareness about Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Diarrhoea and Dengue Fever with farmers.

Seruiratu says they we are still a few weeks away from the end of the cyclone season and it is vital to continue with what is currently being practiced.

Seruiratu is currently touring the Northern Division with the Permanent Secretary David Kolitagane to visit Northern Division teams based at emergency operation centres and officials manning the bulk stores to look at progress of the operation.

He also visited teams at Lekutu, Nabouwalu and Kubulau and Cakaudrove.
