Speeding remains a concern as 42 of the 119 traffic infringements notices issued by the Fiji Police Force between the 22nd to yesterday were for speeding.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu says speeding is the main cause of accidents so far this year and drivers continue to rush unnecessarily to their destinations.

He says 18 people were arrested for drunk driving, 12 people were booked for not wearing seat belts, 9 were booked for not producing driver’s license, 3 for careless driving while 2 were booked for driving with an expired driving license

ACP Driu says 6 drivers were booked for carrying excessive passengers and 27 for other traffic related offences like failure to obey road markings.

He has thanked all drivers for adhering to road safety instructions as this has shown a slight decrease in traffic related offences during Christmas celebration.

ACP Driu says 119 will be the number to beat this New Year weekend and for that, more Police presence will be on the road to see that everyone enjoys themselves without any incident on the roads.

He says he wants to see less infringement and is calling on all drivers to provide their support.

ACP Driu adds officers will continue to be out there to see that roads are safe for everyone.
