Minister for Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu

Historical analysis of natural disasters in Fiji from 2000 revealed that more than 60 people have died during a natural disaster.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu while launching the National Disaster Awareness week.

Seruiratu says almost 30% of Fiji's population are at risk from multiple hazards occurring simultaneously.

He says they have witnessed yearly during cyclone season that more people are dying due to drowning as a result of flooding.

The Minister adds the increase in flooding is a result of the effects of climate change.

He says several communities have relocated because the effect of climate change has threatened their survival and the number of communities needing relocation has increased.

The National Disaster Awareness week that will run for the next 3-days will include online webinar sessions by feature panellists from various sectors and organisations.
