Seven families who are most vulnerable to sea-level rise in Narikoso Village in Kadavu will be relocated to a new and safer area tomorrow.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will be inaugurating the seven houses in Narikoso.

A team from government led by the Prime Minister, Health Minister Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete and Minister for National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu, UNDP in the Pacific and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) will be leaving for Kadavu tonight to deliver solar panels, open school buildings and hand over planting materials and seedlings to Narikoso Village.

The village has been one of the communities facing the full impact of climate change resulting in the village needing relocation.

Through the support of the EU-GIZ Adapting to Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Programme, the seven households will be relocated to a new area.

The main objective of the project is to reduce the vulnerability of Fijian communities currently experiencing climate change.

The project was implemented by the Fiji National Disaster Management Office from 2016 to 2020 with the Relocation Fund of approximately €500,000 or FJ$1.2 million provided by the European Union.

Also, through this project, renewable energy systems will be installed in every home and school building at the new relocation site.
