Residents of Savudrua Village in Dreketi, Vanua Levu have raised concerns about living in tents since 2020 after a cyclone destroyed their homes. They have also raised issues about having water issues and lack of sanitation that has led to most of their villagers suffering from fungal infections.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Divisional Medical Officer Northern, Doctor Tiko Saumalua says this issue is due to the humidity during warm weather that these villagers face since they are still living in tents after the cyclone in 2020.

Dr Saumalua says these fungal infections take long to cure but if a person is following its treatment well, it will take a month for it to go away.

He says the symptoms of these fungal infections are itchiness and rashes.

He adds the Dreketi medical team and the Tamavua Specialist team are working together on the ground for their treatment.

Meanwhile, Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka says the government is aware of villagers at Savudrua still living in tents and they are working hard to relocate them to a safe place.

Ditoka says the relocation is expected to be done in mid to late next year.
