Save the Children Fiji CEO, Shairana Ali (R).

Save the Children Fiji is currently processing over 1,000 applications they have received for assistance from families that have been impacted by COVID-19 in the Lami to Nausori containment zone.

CEO, Shairana Ali says most of these applications are from single mothers who have not been able to go to work, elderly grandparents who are looking after their grandchildren and families that are taking care of disabled children.

Ali says most of these families are either in lockdown areas or have no income as their place of work is closed.

She says they will be assisting these families in the next few days once they have completed vetting and verifying these applications.

Ali says an appeal was also launched by Save the Children New Zealand where they have been able to raise about $36,000.

Families will be getting enough groceries that could sustain them for about two weeks.

These packs include rice, flour, cooking oil, tin fish, rolled oats, split peas, potatoes, baby food, reusable napkins for babies, surgical masks, bathing soap and sanitary pads. Ali says for now, this is a one-off assistance however, as they get funding, they will be able to provide continued assistance to these families.

The organisation had earlier provided assistance for more than 120 families living in the Suva to Nausori corridor.
