The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Fiji has started a survey to determine the number of stray dogs in Suva so that they can find sustainable, humane ways to address the street dog problem.

Clinic and Shelter Manager, Shaneel Narayan says the survey started this month and will continue for another 6 to 7 months.

He says the goal of this survey is to identify the source of the stray and free-roaming dog population and estimate the size, distribution and ecology of the stray and free-roaming dog population.

Narayan says in Fiji, free-roaming dog populations are almost ubiquitous throughout the country, and if left uncontrolled, can have negative consequences for both dogs and humans.

He has highlighted that the key to a successful, humane, long-term dog population management program is identifying the root causes of pet overpopulation, which are often tightly linked to human behaviour and activities.

Narayan adds understanding these dynamic relationships will enable them to have a better understanding of dog ownership and the processes that exist between dogs and humans.

Those who would like to help SPCA can take the survey on this link https://s.surveyplanet.com/tzbYJM5aB

The results of the survey will most likely be released by the end of this year.
