SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka and Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka says they are committed to providing free education up to tertiary level however, the Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says SODELPA will cut funding from somewhere else if they are going to stick to their word.

Gavoka says he believes funds are not being fully utilized for its purpose as funding is provided to both USP and FNU which is a duplication.

He says funding is also provided to the two institutions at the level that are competing with each other.

Gavoka says SODELPA will also make tertiary education free and when this issue came up for debate after he mentioned it in the last parliament sitting, people were asking him how much will it cost.

He says they had done the sums and they came with a figure of one billion dollars for the whole of education.

The Acting Prime Minister says every single year FNU receives not only the operating expenditure but capital expenditure, Toppers and TELS as well.

He says they believe it is a good investment and there is still a long way to go in establishing FNU to get a number of international accreditations.

Sayed-Khaiyum says there is a lot of funding required if education is to be made free up to tertiary level.
