Additional waste collection teams have been mobilized – Nasinu Town Council

Residents of Nasinu are raising concerns about white goods and green waste not being collected by the Nasinu Town Council for months now.

A shop owner in Tovata says some residents are burning rubbish close to the lamp posts in front of his shop, where live wires can be seen hanging dangerously low to the ground.

The shop owner says he reported the issue to the Nasinu Town Council, but despite officers patrolling the area to file reports, nothing has been done.

He also mentioned that while the Council had purchased new equipment, including a compactor, an open truck and is in the process of buying a backhoe, rubbish in many areas of Nasinu continues to pile up like a seawall.

The shop owner added that if the Council had acted promptly, the situation wouldn't have escalated to this point.

Glen Vavaitamana, a resident of Church Street in Nadera, expressed similar frustrations, noting that a large pile of rubbish had been left unattended for three months in front of their residence.

Vavaitamana says the problem began when a house was under construction, and the waste was left on the road.

He says although the Nasinu Town Council cleared it once, people continued to dump more rubbish at the same place.

In response to questions from fijivillage News, Nasinu Town Council Special Administrator Felix Magnus says immediate steps are being taken to clean up the rubbish in the affected areas.

He explained that additional waste collection teams have been mobilized, and temporary waste disposal sites are being set up to handle the increased volume of garbage.

He says the Council is also working with local community groups and volunteers to assist in the cleanup efforts.

Magnus emphasised that high-traffic and severely affected areas are being prioritised, and the Council is committed to keeping residents informed and encourage their participation in the cleanup process.

EFL CEO Hasmukh Patel urges residents of Nasinu not to burn rubbish beside electric posts.
