Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau has stressed to the Land Transport Authority and Fiji Police Force about strengthening their combined operations and the strict monitoring of high-risk areas and black spots, tightening up on driving schools, as well as the issuance of Driving Instructor Permits and conducting rigorous awareness programs in communities that target driver, passenger and pedestrian behaviour.

Ro Filipe says they need to continuously remind all road users that they share equal responsibilities in ensuring road safety whether they are a driver, a passenger or a pedestrian and they will continue to encourage road users to keep within the prescribed speed limits, avoid drink-driving and other distractions while also staying alert and mindful of other road users.

He says they are calling on all road users to exercise caution and vigilance at all times during the festive season while also complying with road safety rules.

The Minister says we have lost enough lives on our roads and has expressed his sincere condolences to all families.

He adds LTA will continue to roll out its community and public outreach programmes on road safety education and awareness, as well as their roadside interventions, advanced driver training programmes and media partnerships to amplify the key messages on adhering to road safety rules and standards.

71 people have died on our roads this year compared to 37 last year.
