Residents and regular users of the Nasese foreshore are raising concerns about the increasing amount of rubbish along the Nasese towards the Suva shoreline, calling it an eyesore for those who use the area for training and recreation.

A concerned resident says many who use the Nasese seawall for exercise and leisure have expressed their frustration, noting that the litter spoils the natural beauty of the area.

The concerned residents are now appealing to the Suva City Council to organize a cleanup of the foreshore because they believe that immediate action is needed to restore the cleanliness of the area, making it safer and more pleasant for everyone who visits.

While responding to the concern, the Suva City Council has told fijivillage News that they have been actively working to address the increase in rubbish along the Nasese foreshore.

They say one of the main reasons for this increase is the tidal push, where rubbish is carried in by the tide and washes up on the shore. This is an ongoing challenge, as rubbish often reappears shortly after cleanup efforts.

They are also greatful to the corporate firms, NGOs, and volunteers who dedicate their weekends to maintaining the shorelines and have been consistently involved with cleanups to address this issue.

These efforts need to be continuous, as it is common to see more rubbish washed up after just one day of cleanup, especially during high tide.

They say to further assist in keeping our shores clean, the Council is also looking into providing additional rubbish bins in the area to encourage proper disposal and there routine programmes in place to clear this area from time to time.

The Council urges the public to dispose of waste responsibly and support the ongoing cleanup campaigns to preserve the beauty of our coastline.
