Residents of Kabutri Drive in Koronivia Nausori will now benefit from proper waste recycling since Waste Recyclers Fiji will be launching its first ever community-based pilot project in October.

Waste Recyclers Fiji director and founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, Amitesh Deo, says recycling needs to be at the forefront and addressed. Therefore, the pilot project will provide the community with a solution to proper waste recycling.

He says the pilot project is about the different training models on how people will be separating their rubbish and recycling it, which aims to generate data, income for households, and innovations with different materials that will be recycled.

Deo says this will be a free of cost project and there will be different rubbish bins placed at the entrance of the community since the project is initiated by the Waste Recyclers Fiji and Pacific Recycling Foundation in partnership with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Nausori Town Council and RC Manubhai & Company Pte Limited.

He further says that Waste Recyclers Fiji will be advocating for volunteering community members through dialogue, discussions, and comprehensive training to ensure that the community members are well trained about proper waste recycling.

Deo also says that currently there is a recycling program at Jai Narayan College. However, if the project is effective, then it will be extended to other communities and areas as well.

The residents of Kabutri Drive say they are fortunate and happy about the project as they will now have proper waste recycling in the area, which will prevent them from dumping waste on roadsides, backyards, and burning rubbish.

Minister for Education, Premila Kumar says this initiative by Waste Recyclers Fiji will benefit the community as there was no proper garbage collection for the residents before thus, the government will also pay for garbage collection for areas which is not within the collection boundaries.
