Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka with students of Veinuqa District School

Students and teachers of Veinuqa District School in the interior of Namosi are relieved as after years of crossing the creek in front of the school, they now have a bridge.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Veinuqa District School teacher, Maria Tanikorolevu says with the construction of the bridge by the Fijian Government, students are no longer facing the challenges of coming to school or missing school when it rains heavily.

Tanikorolevu says students had to be sent home when it started to rain heavily as they did not want to take the risk of crossing the creek when the water level started to rise.

She says most of the time, when students from kindergarten, Year 1 or Year 2 fell because of slippery rocks in the creek, they needed to go back home to change and could miss school on that day.

The teacher says in attendance has improved after the opening of the bridge.

She further says happiness can be seen in students' expressions because they are no longer crossing the creek.

Tanikorolevu adds following the construction of a road last year, teachers do not have to walk 2 miles for three hours, catch a boat and travel for almost 2 hours to get to Navua.

Veinuqa District School has 23 students and four teachers.
