Registration drives for Fijians living overseas has now closed according to the Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem.

As at 2nd of October, there are 9,480 voters who are registered overseas.

Although the Writ of Elections has not been issued, Saneem says with the writ being imminent it is not a wise idea to send staff with the registration kits overseas as it will delay the final numbers.

Earlier this month, we had received information from some Fijians living in Papua New Guinea who wanted to register as a voter or upgrade their voter card from green to blue.

They say no Fijian Elections Office registration teams have visited PNG and there is no Fijian High Commission in PNG.

When they tried to register online, it said that their registration is rejected as they need to sign in front of an Elections Officer.

On October 4th, we asked Saneem how these Fijians could register as they want to register but there was no means to register with no High Commission or no registration team going there.

Saneem says they did not go to PNG for this election. He says anyone from PNG who is a registered voter can apply for postal voting when the writ is issued.

Saneem says they will not be able to go and register voters there.
