Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong

The Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong says they are working to register all those that will be part of the first phase of vaccination for COVID-19.

He says the priority group in phase 1 will include front-line workers, people aged 60 years and over and those with medical conditions.

Dr Fong says they are currently putting a list together for this group of people to ensure they have a good coverage before they move to other groups of people who will be vaccinated.

He also confirms the capacity for storage of vaccines has also been sorted.

Dr. Fong says he does not want to put down a definitive timeline as to when Fiji will receive the vaccination as they first want to ensure their supply chain issues are resolved.

He had earlier said that all COVID-19 vaccines that have been approved for use are effective in preventing a person from getting severely sick if infected by the disease however they are less useful when it comes to preventing transmission.

Dr. Fong says people should not expect that just because they will be vaccinated, we can do away with all COVID-19 safe measures.
