President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has confirmed that to enhance the safety and security of all citizens, the review of the Police Act will commence soon.

Ratu Naiqama highlighted this while opening the Parliament this morning.

While responding to questions by fijivillage News on the Police Act, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says it is just to sharpen the areas of responsibility and also making sure that the police carry out the police investigations all the way to prosecution, and not throw everything into FICAC.

Ratu Naiqama also says the review of the Illicit Drugs Control Act has started as Fiji grapples with the challenge of illicit drugs.

He says the Government is taking decisive action to enhance public safety by strengthening law enforcement agencies and investing in modern technology, modernizing the legal framework.

The President says collaboration with partners will improve cyber-security capabilities of critical infrastructure operators, government agencies, and the law enforcement personnel.

He says as a key player in the regional security, Fiji will address regional challenges in cooperation with strategic partners who will provide technical expertise. The President says the Government will work closely with regional and development partners to combat transnational crimes, including drug smuggling and human trafficking and adds that Fiji’s diplomatic relations and peacekeeping role continue to be a priority.

He also says the newly established Ministry of Immigration is at the forefront of the commitment to protect Fiji’s sovereignty and facilitate economic growth.

Ratu Naiqama says the Government has significantly enhanced border security through the Integrated Border Management System, as Fiji continues to combat human trafficking.

He says the launch of online platforms for permit applications will enhance efficiency and security and visa and permit systems have been streamlined, enabling the swift entry of skilled professionals and investors.

The President adds the Government has also developed adaptive policies to address emerging migration challenges.
