Our language is our identity and history and preserving it is not just about words; it is about safeguarding our heritage and strengthening the bond between generations.

This was highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad during the celebration of World Hindi Day yesterday at the Hindi Kavi Sammelan 2025.

While speaking at the event, Professor Prasad says there is an urgent need to preserve the Hindi language, which is gradually losing its prominence among younger generation.

He also commended the Indian High Commission for organizing the celebration and underlined the cultural and historical importance of Hindi.

He says the relationship between Fiji and India is a historic bond, and this relationship is connected through our language and through this, they have now officially introduced Hindi in Parliament.

Professor Prasad says during and after Girmit, the propagation of Hindi began globally and it is through this that Fiji’s ties with India have remained strong.

He says Fiji hosting the 12th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan is a testament to its commitment to promoting Hindi worldwide.

Professor Prasad says there is a need for community involvement in preserving Hindi and called for its inclusion in schools and community-based programs.

The Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Fiji’s growing partnership with India, especially through a joint venture to establish a 100-bed super-specialty hospital in the near future.

He says Hindi is not just a language; it is a part of who we are and we must nurture and cherish it for future generations.
