Traffic offences could easily be avoided if all road users practice responsible driving behaviors and adhere to road safety rules to curb the alarming number of fatalities.

This was highlighted by the Land Transport Authority Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa who says the safety regulations continue to fall on deaf ears for most drivers.

Rokosawa says the offences that continue to top the list are failure to use seat belts, speeding, and failure to produce a driver's license during this festive season.

He says the alarming statistics reveal that there are 72 fatalities so far this year compared to 38 for the same period last year.

He further says since the initiation of the LTA-Fiji Police Force joint enforcement operations, 1150 traffic offences have been recorded so far from the 24th of November to the 1st of December this year.

190 offences were attributed to speeding alone during this period, 71 offences for failure to use seat belts, and 60 for failure to produce a driver's license.

Rokosawa says the authority would continue to work closely with stakeholders and the Police to crack down on reckless driving habits on our roads.

Rokosawa is urging motorists to stay informed about road regulations, drive responsibly, and be mindful of their speed to contribute to safer roads for all.
